Small Business is not a Charity
Bob Bender / Owner of Bob Bender Productions
Recently it came to my attention that I work for free… or at least a few seem to think that I should. You see, I own this business. I’ve had it since 1987. I have overhead, and always have. Things like office space, utilities, bills to pay, payroll to meet, projects to complete for paying clients that require the services of vendors and sub-contractors. You know the average things that the typical business owner has dangling over their head every single day. Why is it then that there are those (especially in my industry), that feel compelled to seek my advice, but aren’t willing to pay for it, or once I’ve advised them, they take the knowledge I provide and prevail it upon themselves to “DIY” the project without retaining our services?Read More

Sore, Hungry, and Slow: 3 Signs That Show Your Program Is Working
Exercise makes us feel great. It makes us less hungry. It helps us perform everyday tasks better. Besides our health and the way we look, feeling great, being less hungry, and performing better are exactly the reasons we put ourselves through exercise. However, en route to ultimate fitness, there are some hurdles we all need to clear. Mainly, they include being faced with the opposite of our intended goals. Enter the trilogy of grumpiness: getting sore, slow, and hungry. We tend to look at these as negatives, but how about a little New Year’s spin? You want these feelings because they’re clear signs your program is working. Before we analyze why you need to embrace “going backward,” let’s answer the obvious question: why would we design this type of program? Certainly, there are exercise programs that don’t put you through torture. Could we have chosen such a path with P90X®?Read More
The Bakersfield Downtown Business Association has developed two great tools for the downtown area. We have put together the Restaurant Guide and Shopping Guide.
The Restaurant Guide has been a huge success since it began in April of 2012, with the Marriott Hotel, Padre Hotel, Jury’s Room and Convention Bureau. This helps direct the people coming to the downtown area to the restaurants they would like to patron. Categorized under types of food and map make the restaurants easy to find.
Also available are advertising spaces for the restaurant members of the Downtown Business Association. Business card size ads are still available for our next print.
We put together the Shopping Guide which will be our first one going to print in about two weeks. This has been highly requested from the above suppliers.
There is still time to advertise your store in this guide by becoming a member of the Downtown Business Association. If you are a member and want to be sure you are listed you can contact Melanie Farmer at 661-325-5892 or firstname.lastname@example.org. There are still ads available in this guide as well.
